Description
Jaime Hernandez Love and Rockets #1 Story Page 1 First Appearance of Maggie and Hopey Original Art (Los Bros. Hernandez, 1981). This page was the very first appearance of Hopey and Maggie! Sure, Maggie had blonde hair, and they both needed a bit of a haircut, but pretty much everyone fell in love with them instantly. They were bold and captivating characters, embodying a Punk ethic coupled with the insecurities of youth. In short, they were characters that were easy to empathize with and to root for. When Fantagraphics reprinted this story in the Volume 2 #1 release of the title, Maggie and Hopey became part of the driving force behind the popularity of this book (the other being Gilbert Hernandez' Los Palomar stories). Characters from both of the brothers' works would grow and evolve over the years, with measures of sad and wonderful results along the way. Hopey and Maggie would split up, gain weight, find love, get lost, and eventually find each other again. And it all began right here... on this very page. The story "Mechan-X" is credited on the page as written by Izzy Ruebens. Izzy was herself a character in the issue, as she was the star of the story "How To Kill A", and would eventually turn up as a friend of Hopey and Maggie's, who lived in Hoppers. The historic page was created in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". It is lightly toned, with a bit of hand-lettered paste-up text correction, and some whiteout art touch-up. The page has been in the hands of one owner since the mid-80s and has never been offered on the market before. In Very Good condition.
