Jaime Hernandez Love and Rockets #1 "Mechan-X" Page 7 Original Art (Fantagraphics, 1982). Let's go all the way back to the beginning for this rare Love and Rockets page! This is from the story that introduces Maggie Chascarrillo and Hopey Glass, the two star-crossed lovers who weave in and out of each other's orbits over the course of thirty years. Here, a young Maggie is on her first job assisting prosolar mechanic Race Rand, as their attempts at repairing a downed rocket ship are almost thwarted by the alien "Tall Tracker." While the Sci-fi elements were eventually played down in Jaime's ongoing Locas saga, it's fun to see this early page, with a floating hover-car in the last panel (these fantastic exploits involving rockets, aliens, dinosaurs, and robots were later explained as fictionalized writings by Maggie's childhood friend, Izzy). Jaime's talents as a writer and artist were already in full bloom here, and things would only get better! Ink, graphite, and blue pencil on Bristol board, with an image area of 10" x 15". A word balloon in the last panel is an original replacement that has a slight glue stain around the edges; otherwise this page is in Excellent condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
