Jack Kirby Captain 3-D #1 Pages 5 and 22 Original Art Group of 2 (Harvey, 1953). An incredible rare Kirby find... original Jack Kirby artwork produced for a 3-D comic! Page 5 is from the origin portion of the story, and page 22 is the last page of the story (with a great image of a flying Captain 3-D). The production techniques are almost more akin to animation art than standard comic book art. Kirby penciled the page layout on Duotone board. Then inker Mort Meskin (with assists from Steve Ditko) painted the black line art on the top of acetate sheets. There is a separate sheet for each visual layer of "depth" that would be keyed to the red/blue lenses of the glasses. One page has four layers and the other has five. Then the solid white paint was added from the backside of the acetate sheets to block out images and shapes. Because of these layers, even viewing the original artwork without 3-D glasses gives a feeling of depth to the static page. The overall image area of the pages is 12" x 18". The paper frames and text pieces have tanned with some slight aging in the acetate sheets as well. Overall they are in Very Good condition.
