Jack Kirby and Joe Sinnott Fantastic Four #58 "The Dismal Dregs of Defeat!" Page 12 Original Art (Marvel, 1967). Reed Richards goes toe-to-toe with the dreaded Doctor Doom in this astonishing, action-packed page from the hand of Jack "King" Kirby. This is the kind of page collectors wait for years to see come up for sale. Until the past few years, a page like this would be trading hands within the "inner circle" of big dealers & collectors behind the scenes at major comic conventions, never making it to the dealer's room for the public to even see, let alone make an offer. Leave it to Heritage to change all the rules with this caliber of comic art!
The page is pure Kirby energy, complete with wild sound captions and great visual effects, like the panel where Doom sticks his metal-gloved hand practically out of the page at the reader. Kirby's powerful pencils are expertly matched here with Jolly Joe Sinnott's crisp inking. There are enough explosions and power blasts to satisfy anyone looking for a top-shelf example of Jack Kirby Silver Age art. The page is drawn in ink and blue pencil on Bristol board, with an image area of 12.5" x 18.5"; there are penciled notes in the margins, some of which were cropped off when the board was trimmed. There's a hint of "Kirby seasoning" on the back of the board, and there are a few pieces of tape at the bottom of the page and a couple of tiny stains here and there, but overall, the artwork remains in Excellent condition. It's a true Mighty Marvel Masterpiece in every sense of the word. If you don't like this one, we'll eat our Merry Marvel Marching Society hats, True Believers!
