Gene Colan and Vince Colletta Captain Marvel #4 Story Page 3 Original Art (Marvel Comics, 1968). Here is the Marvel Marvel, or Mar-Vell -- not to be confused with the Shazam! Marvel or the various other iterations of the title. Stan Lee appropriated the long-dormant name to strategic advantage before DC Comics could resurrect the 1940s-'50s Fawcett-Marvel trademark, which DC had snagged in litigation a generation earlier. The Marvel Marvel, as it were, is a bold concoction, captured here in the act of pretending to be somebody else entirely. Colan's cinematic pencilling responds well to Colletta's broad-stroke inking. Signed by Colan at lower margin. A distinctive period-touch, Marvel Comics-style, is the Leroy-lettered "continued" footnote, a warning that an advertisement was about to interrupt the action. (Marvel seldom used the Leroy lettering-stencil device.) Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Marginal edits and registration punctures. Otherwise in Excellent condition.
