Frank Miller Ronin #1 Story Page 24 Original Art (DC, 1983). This is only the seventh page from Ronin that Heritage has ever offered. Having just saved the woman and baby on the previous page, the Ronin samurai settles them by the fire here on Page 24, as the first issue reaches its halfway point. Frank Miller's art style was making an evolutionary leap during the creation of this series. Befitting the tale that jumps from feudal Japan to the far-flung future, he used two styles of art. The ancient Japan period pieces are in style similar to Goseki Kojima's Lone Wolf and Cub manga series. The futuristic period used a style similar to the French artist Moebius' work from Heavy Metal magazine. As the two time periods crossed over, so to, did the art styles.
According to collecting lore, only pages from the first issue have ever left Miller's possession. So only a maximum of 48 pages may be available to the market. A game-changer of a book, it was the first modern series where DC allowed the creator to retain the rights to the character. Ronin has since been celebrated as among the most important and influential stories ever published. Miller is arguably the greatest superhero writer/artist to work during this period, and Ronin helped launch a much-needed comics revolution. Many fans feel that there would be no Sandman, Watchmen, or Dark Knight Returns, without this visionary work leading the way. Ronin has inspired countless creators, among them Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fame.
This page was crafted in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". The faces in Panel 2 are both original art paste-up created on trimmed sections of Bristol board. There is production tape in the margins. Overall, the page is in Excellent condition.
