    Description

Dave McKean Batman: Arkham Asylum Pages 78-79 Spread Original Art (DC, 1997). Grant Morrison scripted a Batman graphic novel like no other with this important book, which also goes by the title, Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth. The oft-mentioned asylum for the criminally insane that housed, among others, the Joker, Two-Face, Mad Hatter, and Killer Croc, to name but a few, gives up her history, and a dark history it is, in this story. It's considered one of the greatest Batman graphic novels ever, and a large part of that reception was due to the otherworldly quality of Dave McKean's art, which has the effect of actually taking the reader inside this house of horrors.
This double page spread virtually defies description. It's without a doubt one of the most unusual pieces of comic art that has ever come through the Heritage doors. This mixed-media piece incorporates treated photos, rusty screws, electronic components, wires, even a piece of burlap in addition to the painted figures, done in a mix of watercolor, graphite and acrylic paints. The art is on illustration board that measures approximately 29.5" x 21.5". There are scratches on the painted surface that were intentionally added by McKean as part of the effect. One of the white panel borders in the center is separating very slightly, there is some sticky adhesive outside of the image area, and there is a bit of edge wear from handling this massive work of art, but overall, it remains in Excellent condition. Both Morrison (adding a Batman silhouette for good measure) and McKean have added their signatures in gold ink.
