    Description

Bill Elder and Harvey Kurtzman Mad #25 "Fozless Fooznick" Page Original Art (EC, 1955). The mind positively reels at this parody of a parody within a parody -- or something like that! Al Capp poked fun at his friend Chester Gould's Dick Tracy strip by having Li'l Abner hooked on the comic adventures of "Fearless Fosdick," and from time to time, Fosdick's adventures would take center stage in the Li'l Abner newspaper strip. Capp, shrewd businessman that he was, licensed Fosdick for a highly successful series of magazine side-page advertisements for Wildroot hair tonic. Harvey Kurtzman and Bill Elder found the Wildroot ads so ridiculous that, in the second magazine-format issue of Mad, they produced this blisteringly funny take-off. The jokes run fast and furious -- note Fooznick's badge, as it changes from crescent moon to shooting star -- and we love the final panel of slicked down Dogpatchers, along with sad-eyed Daddy Warbucks and Henry, who are unable to use the product! We don't know why they didn't go ahead and slap some on -- after all, the label clearly states, "Makes Good Shine!" The ink on blue-grid bristol has an image area of approximately 4.25" x 19.25". The art, which includes several pasted-on corrections and type stats (all original), has been matted and Plexiglas framed to an overall size of 11" x 26". In Excellent condition. From The Art of the Funnies Collection.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
