Bernie Wrightson Web of Horror Unfinished False-Start Page 3 of "The Monster Jar," Orphaned Story Original Art (Major Magazines, 1970). Wrightson had anticipated a breakthrough with Web of Horror, an ambitious title from the publisher of Cracked magazine, but the series collapsed before its fourth issue -- for which "The Monster Jar" was intended. Wrightson drew the inspiration from Ray Bradbury's macabre short story, "The Jar," as published in 1955's The October Country and dramatized in 1964 for The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. Wrightson's final (fully finished) seven-page "Monster Jar" exists in private hands, but this page comes from a tentative first attempt, which the artist abandoned in favor of the more detailed ink-wash version. Three panels are pencilled, with inks applied to another. Signed and annotated by the artist at lower tier. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 14" x 17.75". Light toning. Brush-stroke markings (line-weight tests) at right margin. Very Good condition.
