    Description

Barry Smith and Tim Conrad The Savage Sword of Conan #16 Page 53 Original Art (Marvel, 1976). A defining moment in Barry Windsor-Smith's development as an artist -- and as a confident interpreter of the great storyteller Robert E. Howard. An officer of the Roman Empire guts a crucified captive -- to the displeasure of a cruel ruler who would have preferred a more sadistic execution. Conrad's inks and painted textures provide the ideal finishing strokes. The basis is Howard's "Worms of the Earth" (1932), an adventure of the regal warrior Bran Mak Morn. The lower margin contains a revealing bit of back-story drama: An unsigned editor complains to scripter Roy Thomas about a misspelled word. Ink, ink wash, and white/gray watercolors on conjoined sheets of Bristol board. Reverse contains a stick-figure doodle-sketch. Image area, 10.5" x 15". Conspicuous age-toning and marginal handling wear, with one horizontal adhesive seam. Otherwise in Very Good condition.
