Alex Toth Witzend #10 Partial Story Original Art Group of 4 (Wonderful Publ., 1976). A fascinating back-story, here, in Toth's tale of a mysterious seagoing voyage: Underground Comix publisher Denis Kitchen had commissioned the story, "39/74," for an issue of Comix Book, Marvel Comics' semi-Underground experimental title -- seeking to mingle Underground artists with more commercially attuned talents, such as Toth. Marvel's Stan Lee, however, rejected the story. It landed in Witzend, a maverick publication that artist Wallace Wood had launched. Toth combines a deep-black line weight with delicately layered shading, achieving the look of an Old Hollywood movie. "39/74" reappeared in 2013 in the anthology The Best of Comix Book. This selection contains pages 1,2, 5, and 6 of the 10-page yarn, along with Toth's mailing envelope. Inscribed to comics historian Bill Peckmann. Ink, ink-wash, and crayon over graphite on pebbled Coquille board. Image area, 10" x 14". Light toning and marginal pin-punctures. Excellent condition.
