Description

Ward Hunter Frontiersman Painting Original Art (c. 1920s). An unusual application of metallic sheen adds vibrancy to this panoramic miniature, depicting an explorer of the American wilderness overlooking a mighty river. The piece is untitled, but it evokes the mood and attitude that historian Bernard DeVoto would convey in the research that led him to write such popular novels as Across the Wide Missouri. Inscribed to a friend at lower left. Oil on composition board. Image area, 9.25" x 3.75", framed to 14" x 8.5. Moderate age-toning in matted area. Excellent condition. From A Collection of Great Cartoonists and Illustrators.
