    Description

Wally Wood Dweller in the Dungeon EC Painting Original Art (1954). This incredible peak period painting by science-fiction master Wally Wood was originally given as a gift by the artist to EC publisher Bill Gaines, and hung in the famed EC offices for several years in the 1950s, the heyday of the legendary company. Realizing the great talent of his stable of artists, Gaines had requested paintings from a few of the best -- including Jack Davis, Al Feldstein, and Graham Ingels -- to proudly display. Long after EC's demise, Wood reacquired the painting from Gaines, and ultimately sold it to a collector who owned it until the early 1990s, when our consignor acquired it. A black and white print of the painting was included in the 1978 National Cartoonists Society Portfolio of Fine Comic Art. The painting has also been featured in the color section of the deluxe edition of Against The Grain: Mad Artist Wallace Wood, in Tales of Terror!: The EC Companion, and published as the cover for the 1986 Eclipse comic book World of Wood #4, as well as turning up in various fanzines. It was also displayed at DragonCon 2003 in an exhibit of Wood's art. The colors are rich and captivating and the image features all the hallmarks of Wood's science-fiction wizardry: the gross and menacing Dweller is balanced in the painting by the lovely and delicate endangered female, and the monster is immediately reminiscent of Wood's work on the Mars Attacks and Topps' Ugly Stickers trading cards. It's a true pleasure to be offering such an important piece of comic art history at auction for the very first time! Signed in the lower right, this is produced in oil on stretched canvas with an image area of approximately 19.5" x 17.5". It is framed without glass.
