Description

Richard Sala Cat Burglar X: Killing the Bat King Original Art (2016). Only the best for Sala: For the present selection, the artist used the finest Arches-brand archival paper to support his wet-brush application of ink and color washes. This excerpt from a Cat Burglar X suite of weird-mystery paintings pits Sala's recurring Cat Burglar character against a very Batman-like menace. Here is a solid argument as to why Sala bears consideration as a worthy successor to Edward Gorey as a master at combining nightmarish weirdness with a tongue-in-cheek attitude. The wash textures are deepened further by Sala's application of old-fashioned paint-spatter technique to intensify the prevailing shades of blue. (The meaning is literal: Loading a toothbrush with liquefied tint, and then spattering it onto the surface in a masked or controlled area.) On the reverse, a faint pencil-sketch represents a rehearsal for the face of the outlaw protagonist. Dimensions, 10" x 13". Excellent condition.
