Frank Frazetta Death Dealer IV Study Painting Original Art (1987). The Death Dealer character is Frank Frazetta's most recognizable and best-known character from his paintings. With his first appearance in the first painting (used on the cover of Molly Hatchet's first album), he captivated an audience. In 1987, Frank Frazetta produced three more of the eventual six famed "Death Dealer" paintings. This was the third from that year and, in many ways, the strongest of the three. It tells a story in just a single image, as Frazetta often did, but instead of showing the aftermath or even the high-action of a story, this piece shows just the beginning of what is going to be an epic, pitched battle. Just look at the size of that gator! The viewer's mind supplies the following battle.
The final painting produced from this work is essentially unchanged. The biggest changes are that the gator's grasping foot is placed on the ground, and a disembodied head is seen bobbing in the water near the fetid ghoulish body at the bottom.
This gem has been in the same collection since it was purchased in the 1990s directly from art dealer Alex Acevedo/Alexander Gallery, who at the time was acting as Frazetta's representative, so it's only ever been in one collection, and has never before been offered at auction.
Crafted in graphite and watercolor on paper, there is more detail and depth to this small study piece that many painters can manage in a full-size production. It has been housed in a gorgeous mat and metal frame. Signed in the upper right of the 4.25" x 5" image area. The glass front frame measures 12" x 12.5". In Excellent condition.
