Ernest Hamilton Baker Time Magazine Gen. Miles Dempsey Cover Painting Original Art dated 3-19-45 (Time Inc., 1945). Baker's association with military scenes makes him a natural to have depicted Sir Miles Christopher "Lucky" Dempsey as an eminénce grisé of British warfare. Modeled after candid photographs known to date from 1944, this soulful character study captures Dempsey at a late plateau of his career, around the time of his command during the Battle of Normandy. Dempsey had served in both World Wars; he faced retirement by 1947. A cryptic identifying note (reverse) suggests that this composition may have originated as part of a suite of such portraits, whether for exhibition or for publication. Opaque textured watercolors and wax pencils on illustration board. Dimensions, 11" x 12". Marginal handling wear. Very Good condition.
