Dick Sprang - Original Painting, "Secrets of the Batcave" (Gotham Graphics, 1995). "Secrets of the Batcave" was the first in a proposed series of limited-edition lithographs by master Batman artist Dick Sprang. Sprang was the artist often referred to as the "Good Bob Kane" back in the days when few comics creators received credit on the printed page, and all Batman art was credited to Bob Kane. Even without the by-line, Sprang's work was easy to spot, and has been popular with collectors for years. Unfortunately, much of his original art from the 1940s through to his retirement in 1963 has been lost, making the few surviving pieces highly desirable among collectors. This huge original for the limited edition print (which has since sold out), with an image size of 23" x 33" (board size 40" x 29", the largest ever done by Sprang), should be considered the ultimate Dick Sprang Batman original art, loaded with incredible detail taken from many classic stories and the 1960s television series. Included are images of many well-known villains of the past, drawn as only Sprang can. The art, drawn in ink and mixed media on heavy board, is in excellent condition. The back of the board has a hand-lettered statement of provenance and signature from Mr. Sprang, who passed away in 2000.
