Description
Carl Barks Ancient Persia Donald Duck Painting CB-OIL 6 Original Art (1971). This is something to quack about! One of the earliest "Duck paintings" by the most famous duck artist of all-time! This image of Donald and his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie was produced in 1971 and is based on the cover of Four Color Comics #275 from 1950. This was the first version of "Ancient Persia" painted by Barks, and he would return to this image later for three more paintings based on it. Each version sported a different color for the curtains being pulled back by the story's Mad Scientist protagonist (or Uncle Scrooge in one of the versions). In addition, this first version has a chandelier that is more fully embellished and detailed than any that followed. Check out the work in those green tentacles!Produced in oil on 16" x 20" stretched canvas, the warm colors and lovely detail make for a very expressive and impressive piece. It is signed by Barks in the lower left with a © Walt Disney Productions notation in the lower right. The reverse side is marked as "Produced Sept. 1971 by Carl Barks". And among Disney/Barks scholars, it is referred to as "#71-18" or "CB OIL 6". The piece itself has very minor corner wear and is in Excellent condition (note that what might appear in the printed/online image to be a diagonal scratch is actually a painted line showing the path of the slingshot pellet).
The stretched canvas piece is not framed, however, it comes with a handsome 23" x 27" wooden frame.
Like the ancient citizens of the lost city of Itsa Faka who vanish at the end of the story, this "Ancient Persia" painting is likely to disappear for many long years into a private collection after this sale. It is a favorite among Barks fans, and a rare treasure indeed.
