Otto Soglow - Original Comic Strip Art for The Little King Sunday dated 12-16-34 (King Features Syndicate, 1934). In the 1930s, as the once-silent movies became the talkies, a small number of newspaper comic strips took off in the opposite direction. Pantomime strips like Henry became hugely popular with audiences worldwide. One of the very best of these wordless strips was The Little King, drawn by Otto Soglow. Soglow had been known as a magazine cartoonist, with work appearing in Judge, Life, and New Yorker, where the silent King made his first appearance. Lured from the magazines by Hearst, Soglow began another pantomime strip called The Ambassador, before moving The Little King over to the papers. This strip is noted for its almost stark, stylized appearance, with virtually no shading added, yet it always seems alive with action. This particular example shows the miniature monarch making the most of his required attendance at the royal horse show. The image area is approximately 20.5" x 16"; the page has a few tiny smudges here and there, but for the most part, is in excellent condition.
