Oscar Cesare Congressaurus Editorial Cartoon Original Art (1930s). Not only is Congress a fossil -- it also is a spineless fossil. So declares Cesare in this double-whammy satirical gem, ambiguously dated. Although Cesare oftener practiced a grimly serious, semi-realistic style, this example finds him at his cartooniest best. Undocumented as to publishing pedigree; likely to have originated with The Saturday Evening Post, a steady outlet for Cesare. A caption declares 1933, but an official-looking rubber-stamp imprint (reverse) shows 1938. More certain that Cesare inscribed the composition in 1946 to an admirer in Texas, Jack Kent, soon to become a great cartoonist in his own right. (Kent is remembered for the classic fantasy-humor strip King Aroo.) Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition. From the Jack Kent Collection.
