Noel Sickles Scorchy Smith Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 2-25-36 (Associated Press Newsfeatures, 1936). Sickles' polished art and brisk dialogue had helped to popularize Scorchy Smith beyond its 1930-33 stretch under the late John Terry. Sickles knew he was earning the syndicate $2,500 a month (vs. his chump-change compensation of $125 a month), and when his bid for a raise was nixed, he ankled it to become an all-'round commercial illustrator. Although Scorchy is primarily an aviation-adventure feature, this episode depicts an earthbound interlude in a Manhattan traffic jam. Ink over graphite on chemical-shading board, conjoined at middle by a reverse production-tape seam. Image area, 24" x 5.25". Deep overall age-toning. Very Good condition. From the Jack Kent Collection.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
