Moebius (Jean Giraud) Lt. Blueberry #4 The Ghost Tribe "The Long March" Page 27 Original Art (Epic, 1980). French comics legend Moebius, aka Jean Giraud (or "Gir"), is universally hailed as one the greatest talents to ever work in comics. According to a Wikipedia entry, "Around 1961-62 Jean Giraud asked Jean-Michel Charlier whether he wanted to write scripts for a new Western series for Pilote. Charlier refused at first, since he never felt much empathy for the genre. In 1963 the magazine sent Charlier on a reporting assignment to Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert, California. He took the opportunity to discover the American West, returning to France with a strong urge to write a Western. First he asked Jijé to draw the series, but Jijé thought there would be a conflict of interest, since he was a regular artist at Spirou, a competing comic magazine. Therefore Jijé proposed his protégé Giraud as the artist of 'Lt. Blueberry.'" Starting in 1963, Giraud also began signing his science fiction and fantasy work as his more famous alter-ego, "Moebius." For the satire magazine Hara-Kiri, Moebius created over twenty strips, then disappeared for almost a decade. In 1975, Moebius reappeared in the pages of Metal Hurlant, and in 1981, he launched his celebrated "L'Incal" series, in collaboration with filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowski. This page (written in French and translated for publication) appeared in the USA in an eighties graphic novel from Epic, and it displays Moebius' mastery of the ultra-detailed, "clear line" art style favored by many European artists. This Western masterwork has a whopping image area of 16" x 21.5", and aside from being cut between panel tiers two and three, it's in Excellent condition.
