DescriptionWill Eisner The Spirit #1 Splash Page Preliminary Original Artwork (Harvey, 1966). The thought processes of a great artist, captured in pencil in real time: Eisner's 1960s revival of The Spirit inspired this conceptual outpouring, which the writer-illustrator rendered in actual publication size on both sides of the page. An accompanying tearsheet from the published comic demonstrates the near-completeness of the preliminary splash-page art. The classic Eisner hallmarks are in place -- the sweltering, rain-soaked cityscape, the architectural design of the Spirit logotype, the windswept and sodden newspaper headlines, the ominous sound effects, and the mysterious figure rushing toward the foreground. The prominent byline, in the artist's handwriting, completes the image. The additional sides of this folded page are blue-pencil roughs, partially lettered, for three subsequent pages. Graphite and blue pencil on layout paper, with image areas of 6" x 9". Light toning. Excellent condition. From the Eric Sack Collection.
