    Description

Wally Wood The World of the Wizard King Preliminary Original Art (Witzend, 1960s-70s). Wood launched the epic Wizard King fantasy in his privately circulated Witzend magazine -- a bridge between the pulp-fiction sword-and-sorcery idiom and the Underground Comix movement of the 1960s-70s. This character-defining image of the dwarf warrior Odkin the Sly (center) is a rehearsal for various panoramic pieces that Wood would deploy "at my convenience," as he liked to say. Wood was mindful of deadlines with corporate publishers, but he rarely imposed time constraints on his solo projects. Wizard King ranks as one of the earliest creator-owned graphic novels, but it never developed to Wood's satisfaction: He had hoped to transplant the tale to a motion picture with animator Ralph Bakshi. Graphite on Eaton's Berkshire Corrasable Bond. Image area, 8.5" x 11". Light toning. Excellent condition.
