    Description

Virgil Finlay Fantastic Novels Preliminary Cover Original Art (Munsey Co./Popular Publications, c. 1940s). Even his conceptual art contains astonishing depths of detail: Finlay, better known for his elaborate scratchboard illustrations and photorealistic fantasy paintings, depicts a dragonlike fire-breather in this rehearsal-piece for an issue of the long-running pulp-fiction magazine. Some lovely pencil-shading, here. Graphite and fingertip-smudged shading on vellum. Image area, 9" x 12". Moderate age-toning. Signed at lower edge, with handwritten memo from the artist. Excellent condition.
