    Description

Sheldon Mayer The Best of DC #43 (a.k.a. Funny Stuff) Cover Preliminary Original Art (DC Comics, 1983). Mayer's conceptual art, though technically a finished work, differs drastically from that which appeared in print: The tightrope scene, here, was sidelined in favor of a depiction of the featured Funny Animal-genre characters aboard a speeding firetruck. Mayer, primarily identified with humor, was a primary architect of the DC line, having helped to establish Superman as a bedrock franchise in 1938, and to develop the broader superhero catalogue that followed. The characters shown include Nutsy Squirrel, Fenimore Frog, Dunbar Dodo, Doodles Duck, J. Rufus Lion, Peter Porkchops, Dizzy Dog, and the Three Mouseketeers (non-Disney). The Best of DC was a digest-size reprint title, featuring various themes. Mayer's studio stamp appears on reverse. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 13". Excellent condition.
