Sheldon Mayer Sugar & Spike Preliminary Original Artwork Group of 100-plus (DC Comics, 1950s-70s). Mayer might as well be the patron saint of DC Comics. The editor-writer-artist helped to invent the company during the 1930s and '40s, and he navigated the genres of humor and mystery/suspense and superhero business without missing a beat. This unruly batch of conceptual drawings represents Mayer's masterwork, the kid-stuff funnybook Sugar & Spike, with innumerable rough sketches and near-finished compositions. (Some incidental pieces also contain ideas for Mayer's Christmas-season perennial, Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer.) A fascinating diamonds-in-the-rough collection. Pencil and ink on tracing paper and bond stock. Image areas, 5" x 8" to 8.5" x 11" and variations. Scattered wrinkling, scuffing, torn areas, and age-toning. Good condition overall.
