Description
Sheldon Mayer Limited Collectors' Edition #C-50 "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" Back Cover Preliminary Original Art and Front Cover Color Guide (DC Comics, 1976). Mayer, a pioneer of the comic-book industry, carried on into advanced age as a mainstay of DC, a company that he had helped to establish. One of Mayer's perennial signature-features was the Christmas-themed Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, which he refined to levels undreamed of in Robert L. May's original storybook of 1939. This prelim back cover piece is pure Mayer -- fanciful and reassuring. Color pencil and white paint over graphite on 12" x 15" wrinkled tracing paper, with tearing at right edge into image area, and edge damage all the way around. It is accompanied by a 10" x 13.5" front cover color-guide of printed line art hand-tinted by DC's production ace, Sol Harrison.
