    S. Clay Wilson 20 Drawings Portfolio "Cowboy" Edition with Added Inscription (Abington Book Shop, 1967) Condition: GD/VG. One of the rarest S. Clay Wilson items out there, this collection of twenty 14" x 11" black and white plates represents the very first appearance of the artist that outdid all the others -- even R. Crumb's work is somewhat tame in comparison! Printed and distributed in Wilson's hometown of Lawrence, Kansas, in an edition of 100-500 (accounts vary), this is one tough cookie to corner. The illustrations inside are typically whacked-out Wilson creations; lots of pirates, cowboys, bikers, bad girls, and demons, all drawn with a crazed look in their collective eyes. The portfolios were presented in a folder with one of four Wilson drawings pasted on the front; this is the "Cowboy" version. Jay Kennedy's Official Underground and Newave Comix Price Guide quoted this one with a value of $400, in 1982. Jerry Weist's 2000 Comic Art Price Guide calls it "one of the rarest and most sought-after of all Undergrounds," and notes that copies seldom survive in above VG condition due to low paper quality. This particular copy has a well-worn cover (with the "Cowboy" cover print having been reattached after coming loose years ago), but the inside pages all appear in Excellent condition. Also included is the original copyright/price page (rarely found still with the set), and the inside panel was signed, "To Payton - who takes nice pictures, S. Clay Wilson 1967-68, River City."

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
