    Description

Ronald McDonald and Friends Mural Design Drawings Original Art by Wes Cook Group of 4 (McDonald's/Setmakers, 1974-80). McDonaldland is the magical, make-believe world where Ronald McDonald and his friends live. In this lot are four original graphite mural designs featuring McDonaldland and its happy inhabitants. The first was for a McDonald's restaurant in Lüneburg, Germany. It features a pastoral setting with Apple Pie Trees, Gobblins, Filet-O-Fish and even a castle and train off in the distance. This mural was designed to serve as the background to a Ronald McDonald statue seating area which is set in the center of the drawing. The art measures 11" x 18.75" on 16.5" x 23.5" vellum, is dated March 18, 1979, and is signed by the artist, Wes Cook. The second drawing was created for a store in Rockville, Maryland and shows a path with a Golden Arches Bridge crossing over a stream. Hamburger Patches, Gobblins, and Apple Pie Trees adorn the whimsical landscape. The artwork measures 8" x 16" on 17" x 22.5" vellum, is dated 7/8/74, and is signed by the artist. The third drawing includes close-up facial images of Ronald, Officer Big Mac, Grimace, Hamburglar, and Mayor McCheese set amongst flowers and greenery. This mural was designed to be painted on ceramic tile and displayed under the counter in a Waipahu, Hawaii location. The art measures approximately 4" x 24" on 14" x 30" vellum, is dated August 15, 1980, and is signed by Wes Cook. The fourth piece in this lot is a pair of mural sections titled "Adaptation of Mayor Theme." The detailed image shows the Mayor strolling down a McDonaldland path lined with Gobblins, Apple Pie Trees and Hamburger Patches. The two images measure 7.5" x 8.25 and 7.5" x 9" respectively on a single sheet of 14.5" x 28.25" vellum, dated June 18, 1979, and is signed by Wes Cook. The first three pieces bear a Setmakers sticker in the lower right. All show minor handling and edge wear; otherwise, condition is Fine.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
