DescriptionPhil Mendez The Three Mousketeers #2 Preliminary Cover Original Art (DC Comics, 1970). Disney may have gotten there first with the Mouseketeers business (as of 1936, in fact), but it took DC Comics pioneer Sheldon Mayer to bring the punning concept to fullest flower. Mayer's Three Mouseketeers Funny Animals books of the 1950s provided reprint fodder for a 1970 revival, but the new books' original covers boast some fine work from Mendez. This conceptual pencil piece (almost a finished work in itself) depicts Fatsy Mouse, Patsy Mouse, and Minus Mouse in a characteristic slapstick situation, rich in humor and suspense. Virtually identical to the inked-and-colored version in terms of composition and expressions. Graphite on DC Sparta Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Light toning. After the fact, someone has created a low-res reproduction of the logo and affixed it directly to the original artwork board. In Very Good condition.
