    Description

Milton Caniff Male Call/Miss Lace Inscribed Color Print (Camp Newspaper Service, 1943). Caniff had sought uniformed service during World War II, only to find himself sidelined by a 4-F classification. So he created Male Call as a pro-bono morale-booster comic strip for the armed forces -- originally as a spinoff of Terry and the Pirates. Evolving into a showcase for an original character, the voluptuous but chaste Miss Lace, Male Call also generated a variety of pin-up images such as this one. The printing quality here is so vivid as almost to resemble original ink-and-watercolor art, compromised only by a uniformity of line texture. Inscribed to Lt. John "Jack" Kent, an aspiring cartoonist whose original strip, King Aroo, would break out in 1950. Dimensions: 14" x 5", affixed to a slab of corrugated cardboard. Moderately age-toned, with one vertical crease and tiny areas of scuffing. Very Good condition. From the Jack Kent Collection.
