DescriptionJack Kirby - Man in Lion Mask Preliminary Illustration Original Art (c. 1970s). It's possible this is an unused design from approximately the era Jack "King" Kirby was working for Ruby/Spears. Kirby was a big fan of mythology, and the lion's head mask does put us in mind of the story of Hercules defeating the Nemean Lion and wearing its pelt. That is why he was also known as "The Lion of Olympus." Is there a connection here? We may never know. Jack Kirby had more forgotten ideas and unused concepts that most creators added together! This fantastic and highly detailed piece is produced in graphite on illustration board at an askew angle. You can see the very faint rough pencil strokes where the character's shoulders would go, so there was more intended for this powerful piece. From chinny-chin-chin to top of his 'do, he measures 10" on this 13.75" x 13.5" lightly tanned board. In Excellent condition.
