Description
Jack Davis Trump #3 Unpublished Preliminary Illustration Original Art (Playboy Press, 1957). The ancient sport of golfing had gained new prominence during the 1950s, largely as a result of President Dwight D. Eisenhower's interest in the game. Humorist Harvey Kurtzman often dismissed golf as a "waste of real estate" (quoted from conversations with comics historian Michael H. Price). For an orphaned issue of Trump, Kurtzman commissioned master cartoonist Davis to deliver a set of slapstick scenes to dramatize a satire of golf. The present selection, depicting a caddy, is the only color-concept piece surviving from that assignment. Trump represented Kurtzman's bold resurgence from the disappointment he had experienced at MAD (an embittered parting with EC Comics). After Trump, Kurtzman would launch the independent but under-capitalized Humbug. (The gambling term Trump is an abbreviation of triumph.) Publisher Hugh Hefner allowed Trump to lapse after two impressive issues. Ink and watercolors on Bristol board. Dimensions, approximately 5" x 6.5".
