DescriptionHerman Stackel Captain Midnight #67 Preliminary Original Artwork for Half-Page Pilot Pete Story (Fawcett Comics, 1948). Stackel was a mentor to many Golden Age comics artists but never became a star player in his own right. His dedication to the craft shows to strong advantage in this partially finished concept piece -- which Stackel at length abandoned in favor of an entirely re-drawn version for publication (Page 23 of the issue). This rejected attempt is in some respects the better-designed piece, with more expressive faces and more emphatic body language. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 14" x 11", framed to 19.25" x 16.25". Excellent condition. From the Philip M. Levine Collection.
