Description
Harvey Kurtzman "Two Gun Zilch" Story Page Original Art (unpublished, 1949). It's impossible to quantify the effect Kurtzman had on the field of comics, and he remains a beloved and influential auteur to this day. This is a real rarity; the earliest surviving comics page, penciled by Kurtzman in his inimitable style. The gag on the page, a reversal of that old chestnut where the villain shoots the ground at someone's fee and says, "Dance!" is explored here, but the page isn't finished, perhaps because Kurtzman didn't like where it was going. If you're interested in another take on the "Dance" bit, you can find the published "Pot-Shot Pete vs. Two-Gun Zilch" in John Wayne Adventure Comics #5 (Toby, 1950). Created in pencil on Bristol board with an image area of 14.25" x 23". Board is moderately toned with moderate handling wear. Left margin irregularly trimmed with heavy edge wear.
