DescriptionHarvey Kurtzman Two-Fisted Tales #32 "Lost Battalion" Preliminary Original Art Group (EC, 1952). Pages one through five of Kurtzman's layouts for the WWI story, "Lost Battalion!", which is the grim tale of a stranded American battalion, pinned in on all sides by the Germans deep within the French Argonne Forest in 1918. The finished version was done by Johnny Craig as a seven-page story. Kurtzman's legendary technique for creating stories at EC was to start with small pencil thumbnails (see "Superduperman" elsewhere in this auction), followed by large heavy pencil layouts. The latter were given by the autocratic editor to the assigned artist to follow religiously, but very seldom were they returned to Kurtzman. In fact, only seven pencil layouts survived, and "Lost Battalion" is the very first to be offered for sale. These layouts were included on pages 54-55 of The Art of Harvey Kurtzman: the Mad Genius of Comics. The art is in pencil on 14" x 18.5" vellum sheets, and is in Very Good condition.
