Harvey Kurtzman Mad #4 "Superduperman" Thumbnail Preliminary Original Art (EC, 1952). Here are Harvey Kurtzman's original thumbnail sketches of the page layouts for the story that put Mad on the map, and made him a star -- Superduperman! For the first three issues of EC's first original humor comic, editor/writer Kurtzman floundered a bit, with generalized take-offs on genres like Crime, Horror, and Science Fiction, plus a few broad parodies of radio shows and newspaper strips. With issue four, he hit on the right formula with his dead-on satire of Superman comics, faithfully embellished with great finished art by Wally Wood. This small fragment is the only one of its kind still in existence, and was featured on pages 96 and 97 of The Art of Harvey Kurtzman: the Mad Genius of Comics. Graphite on 8.75" x 6" lined notebook paper, in Very Good condition. Will Elder called this Superman parody "the funniest thing he (Kurtzman) ever did." Coming from the key contributor to Mad, Trump, Help! and "Little Annie Fanny," that's a remarkable endorsement!
