Gil Kane Werewolf by Night #20 Preliminary Cover Original Art (Marvel Comics, 1974). Kane's breakout from superheroics to horror is paralleled in this breakout scene for one of Marvel's more enduring monster-at-large features -- a vigorous challenge to the institutionalized censorship of the Comics Code, which had outlawed horror titles since 1954. The published version (adding Mike Esposito's inks) would retain the essence of this conceptual sketch. Kane once told us of his unusual choices of objects adorning the table (lower left): "I put the brush in there in case the werewolf's fur might need grooming, and I gave him an ashtray in case he might want a smoke." Graphite on sketch-pad paper, framed by logotype paste-up. Image area, 10.25" x 15". Light toning, with minimal erasure smudges. Excellent condition.
