DescriptionEarl Norem The Savage Sword of Conan #153 Preliminary Cover Original Artwork (Marvel Comics, 1988). Robert E. Howard's barbaric hero has seldom looked more ferocious than in this compellingly designed conceptual piece for one of the better magazine-cover paintings. Astonishingly close in execution to the finished painting, this detailed breakdown demonstrates the grid-pattern process by which Norem designed the radial composition -- relegating Conan to a near-background position, but keeping him dominant through force of personality and aggressive body-language. By comparison, the foreground antagonist appears hesitant and even a trifle scared. The background figures are similarly expressive. Graphite, color wash, and crayon shadings on textured layout paper. Image area, 8" x 11.25. Faint smudging. Excellent condition.
