Carl Pfeufer or Bill Everett (attributed) Sub-Mariner #6 Splash Page 1 Pencil Preliminary Sketch Original Art (Marvel, c. 1942). Ah, the mysteries of Golden Age art. After much research, our consignor points out, "Bill Everett is listed in as last having a Sub-Mariner story in the Winter 1942 All-Winners #7, then (going backwards) Fall 1942 All-Winners #6, then Summer 1942 All-Winners #5, then (possibly) Spring 1942 Sub-Mariner #5. Carl Pfeufer's first definitively (in credits) Sub-Mariner stories are June 1942 Marvel Mystery #32, July 1942 Marvel Mystery #33, and Summer 1942 Sub-Mariner #6. So the question is are the sketches, done in advance of the story art, done by Bill Everett or Carl Pfeufer? I do have sketches for the splash page of Sub-Mariner #5 which has as by 'Everett?' which look very similar. Everett worked for Lloyd Jacquet for years. Could he have done the sketches even if Pfeufer ended up doing the story?" One thing's certain, a Golden Age sketch of the Sub-Mariner belting some Nazis, is a nearly lost treasure, whoever may have drawn it. This socko piece has an overall size of 8.5" x 11", and aside from overall paper aging, it is in Very Good condition.
