Carl Barks Uncle Scrooge#71 Cover Preliminary Original Art (Gold Key, 1967). Barks' conceptual drawing for the "King Scrooge the First" issue is leagues apart from the version that saw print -- heavier on the mystery and intrigue, here, as opposed to the rip-snorting action of the published cover. Brilliant job of capturing the Duck Family characters, from Scrooge McDuck's wary expression to Donald Duck's delighted response to a bountiful discovery. Nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie just seem glad to be here. All are heedless of a menacing background figure. Barks rendered this one in graphite on a sheet of onionskin bond paper. The image area measures 7.5" x 10", counting the signed margin. Naturally toned and in Excellent condition.
