Carl Barks "The Pied Piper of Duckburg" Unfinished Gyro Gearloose Story Preliminary Original Art (c. 1958). In the late 1950s, Western Publishing/Dell Comics planned a Gyro Gearloose series, and contracted Carl Barks to write and draw an 8-page story for the first issue. Barks wrote the tale, titled "The Pied Piper of Duckburg" (a take-off on the classic Pied Piper fairy tale, featuring Uncle Scrooge), and penciled three complete pages before abandoning the project. "I didn't feel like drawing all those pages of mice and children" was his reported response when questioned about the story, years later. Don Rosa actually took copies of these three pages, inked them, and completed the story on his own in 1990. Here are the original pages by Barks, loosely sketched and lettered in blue pencil on six 19" x 13" sheets of Bristol board (Barks cut his pages in half for easier handling, so his six pages would print as three). For those wondering what the Good Duck Artist's classic comics art looked like before inking, this lot is for you! The pages are all in Excellent condition, save an minor amount of handling wear along the outer borders.
