DescriptionCarl Barks Owned and Used Schoolbook with Earliest Known Drawings (1909). This copy of the hardbound Champion Spelling Book by Warren E. Hicks, published in 1909 by American Book Company, was used by young student Carl Barks while attending the Lone Pine School in Merrill, Oregon. Carl, who would have been eight when the book was published, wrote his name no less than three times in the front flypapers, along with the caption, "If this book should jump the track slap its jaws and send it back". In the endpapers, he's drawn a large, grinning image of then-current president Teddy Roosevelt in pencil. Inside the book are approximately 100 small pencil sketches next to the spelled words. If you've ever wondered what the "Good Duck Artist's" earliest art looked like, here it is! And while we didn't find any ducks, we did find a long-billed "gosling," as well as a hint of Unca' Carl's Calgary Eye Opener style art next to the word "bosom" -- pretty sophisticated for such a young age!
