    C. C. Beck Shazam! Captain Marvel DC House Ad Preliminary Original Art (DC, 1972). In the 1940s, the biggest-selling superhero comic book featured not Superman, but the original Captain Marvel. Created by artist/writer C. C. Beck, the "Big Red Cheese" eventually fell victim to a lawsuit brought on by rival publishers National Periodical Publications (DC), who quietly put the beloved character to rest. For fans of the Golden Age of Comics, Captain Marvel was sorely missed, and his return by DC in 1972 was welcome news. This tracing paper pencil sketch of Captain Marvel and Billy Batson was Beck's first "official" version of the character in about 17 years, and was the preliminary version of the art used to herald the good Captain's return, as seen in DC house ads. The sketch has an image area of approximately 9.75" x 7.25", is in Very Good folded condition, and is quite detailed. A tearsheet of the final ad is included, plus a signed letter from Beck, and a color copy of a photo from 1975. A certificate of authenticity is included. This is truly a historic sketch of one of the best-known and most-beloved comic superheroes!
