Description

Bob Zoell Bijou Funnies Preliminary Cover Design and Other Conceptual Drawings Plus One Finished Cartoon Group of 10-Plus (c. 1970s). Nice to imagine Zoell's rubbery, Deco-influenced cartooning style gracing an issue of that Underground Comix standby, Bijou Funnies. It seems nearly to have happened, according to two conceptual sketches in this grouping of fanciful images. (And one finished beach-bully drawing.) Zoell's idea of a Bijou cover takes a cue from 1930s animator Ubbe Iwerks' "Balloon Land" (1935). Additional pieces include evocations of the Fleischer and Disney studios, and some impressive advertising images. Occasional nudity. Graphite on vellum, primarily, and the one ink-and-watercolor piece (light fading in the tints). Image areas range from 7" x 6.25" to 19" x 20". Many folds and wrinkles (the nature of the fragile page-stock), with scattered tearing. Predominantly Good condition.
