Bob Zoell Bijou Funnies Preliminary Cover Design and Other Conceptual Drawings Group of 13 (c. 1970s). Nice to imagine Zoell's rubbery, Deco-influenced cartooning style gracing an issue of that Underground Comix standby, Bijou Funnies. It seems nearly to have happened, according to two conceptual sketches in this grouping of fanciful images. Zoell's idea of a Bijou cover takes a cue from Ubbe Iwerks' classic animated cartoon, "Balloon Land" (1935). Additional pieces include a scene reminiscent of Disney's Fantasia/The Sorcerer's Apprentice (1940); portraits of W.C. Fields, Popeye's Olive Oyl and a very Donald-like Duck; and some impressive advertising images. Graphite on vellum. Image areas range from 7" x 6.25" to 19" x 20". Many folds and wrinkles (the nature of the page-stock), with some marginal tearing. Good condition. From the Eric Sack Collection.
