    Description

Bob Kane Gag Cartoon Original Art and Archive Material Group (c. 1930s-40s). An interesting group of artwork and correspondence from the archives of the creator of Batman. Included are three penciled pages of artwork -- one gag page, a two-sided page of doodles, and a third page with a doodled head and partial body -- that appear to be from Kane's hand (unsigned); plus a three-page fan letter (mentioning buying Batman #1), and 11 pages of fan art in ink, graphite, and color pencil, including an image of Batman and a fan-created cover for "The Light #12". Also included are a few proof sheets of Kane's Peter Pupp comic strip, printed in black and white, and a one-page hand-written synopsis of the storyline. The Peter Pupp pages are very brittle; a couple of the fan drawings are brittle and stained; other pages are in Good to Very Good condition.

    More Information:

This item comes from the collection of Mario J. Sacripante of New York. He tells the story as follows:

"The origin of my Bob Kane (originally Bob Kahn) collection dates back to 1975 when I had literally found it in the garbage in an old steamer trunk not more than twenty-five feet from my front door in Rego Park, Queens. "One man's trash is another man's treasure" as the saying goes, but at the time I was actually afraid to open the trunk, not knowing what I would find.

I knew what it was that I had found, as I had been around antiques and collectibles all my life and had a cousin in the flea market business at the time. Bob Kane had lived next door (way before I moved there), and I learned later that my friend's father actually knew Kane when he had lived in the building."
