Bernie Wrightson Frankenstein Preliminary Book Plate Illustration Painting Original Art (c. 1976). When Bernie Wrightson started this painting, he intended it to be a tipped-in plate for his famed Frankenstein book, but decided to focus entirely on pen and ink illustration before he finished the painting. Bernie Wrightson's life-long fascination with the Frankenstein story has been a constant source of inspiration for the artist. Wrightson commented in Christopher Zavisa's book, Berni Wrightson: A Look Back, "Ever since I first started working professionally I drew the monster into various things. You can find him in just about everything from fanzines to Swamp Thing. It seems as though my whole career up to this point has been in preparation for an illustration of the novel." While the painting is not signed, as a note of provenance, Wrightson has made a handwritten notation and signed the piece on the back of the art. This preliminary painted illustration has an image area of 12.5" x 17.5", and the piece, painted in oil on illustration board, has been matted to an overall size of 20.5" x 25.5". The art is in Excellent condition. This moody piece is sure to be a stand-out in any collection.
