Basil Wolverton Target Comics #31 (v.3#7) Pencil Preliminary Spacehawk Cover Sketch Original Art (Marvel, c. 1942). Born in Oregon in 1909, Basil Wolverton was a one-of-a-kind cartoonist. He started out as a vaudeville performer and radio announcer. In 1929, Wolverton created his first comic strip, Marco from Mars, but couldn't sell it to a newspaper -- it was just too intense. His first successes in the cartooning happened nearly a decade later, in the comic books, with science fiction features like Spacehawk, Space Patrol, and Meteor Martin. Wolverton had a unique talent for portraying grotesqueries, either horrific or humorous, and thus his work had a profound impact on Underground wunderkind Robert Crumb. Unfortunately the Spacehawk was not the cover feature of this issue, and so we fans were denied what would have been another Basil Wolverton masterwork. This piece has an overall size of 8.5" x 11", and it is in Excellent condition.
